With the right goal setting technique, you can manage your time well and be able to attend to everything that you need to do. The key is commitment and organization. Goal setting however is not as simple as writing down the tasks that you need to accomplish in a checklist. There are two kinds of goals, long term and short term goals. Both of these goals can be broken down into sub goals that we can take on piece by piece. For instance, if your goal is to clean your closet by spring, you can already start in winter by checking out the items in your closet that you do not really need. Since it is winter, you can start with the winter clothes and see what items you are no longer using.

The best thing about goal setting is that it allows you to manage your time and organize your tasks so that you can already start a project and tackle it step by step. This is especially true with people who need to do many roles in their lives: a mother, a teacher, a wife, a runner. Doing this will help you beat procrastination. Some people do not accomplish things because they keep putting them off. With goal setting, you do not have a choice but to take on the task already because it is there staring you right down on the face.

Goal setting also motivates people to be more productive or to at least work harder to meet a certain quota or deadline. That is why it is important for goals to be set with a time frame and a measurable change that you need to accomplish. For instance, corporations often give their sales people quotas that they need to reach in a specific amount of time. These edicts are goals and what is great about this is the fact that with the right kind of information, goals can be self-managing. If you are a sales person and you are still shy of 100,000 units before you reach the quota and the deadline is coming in two days, would you not work your butt off to reach it? You do not need a manager to tell you to step up your game. You realize that because you have a goal to guide you.

But goal setting is not just for corporations and employees. It also works for people in their personal lives and in their work at home. If you are shy and you really want to overcome your shyness, you can set a goal for yourself. You can say, I will strike a conversation with five strangers in a day. That is a goal. And this is not tied up to some company profits. It is for your own personal growth.

Goal setting refers to the process of defining and setting goals. Goals are tasks that you need to accomplish. A goal can be large scale such as “I want to be a millionaire when I grow up” to small scale, “I am going to do my assignments today.”

People who have achieved a lot in their lives have set goals for themselves and followed through with them. Some even have checklists that they check off when they have already accomplished a task.

How effective goal setting is lies in the way the goals are made. Goals must be S-M-A-R-T. Goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. It is not enough that you tell yourself that you will accomplish a specific task. The goal must be specific enough that you know what to do with it. It must have a time frame so you know how much time you have. It needs to be something you can actually do and not some impossible task or something that is entirely dependent on other people. And lastly, it needs to be a task that can be measured so that you will know if you have already accomplished the task or not.

Goals give the impression of being real and possible. In fact, the most impossible of dreams can come true by converting a dream into a goal and breaking down the dream into subgoals that you can achieve one by one.

For instance, if you dream to become a doctor someday, one of the subgoals that you need to set is to get to medical school and get an internship. Actually, people do goal setting in their minds all the time but what makes defining these goals much more effective is that it becomes something that we can work on.

Despite these benefits, not all people are helped by goal setting. You see, it all comes down to how the goals are set. If they are set the right way, they will help the person accomplish the goals. If not, they will only serve to frustrate the person and disappoint him further.

1. Know what you want to achieve and check if you can do them.
The first step in goal setting is to know what you want. Know your goal and then check if you are capable of achieving it in the near future. This takes studying yourself and being realistic. You really need to determine if the goals that you have are achievable.

2. Define it
The next step is to define the goal. Make sure that you include a lot of details. The more specific it is, the better. If the goals are too big or too general, then break it down to smaller more manageable pieces that you know you can work on. This way, you will be able to start accomplishing your goal right off.

3. Set a time limit
Having a deadline for your goals is very important because it becomes your catalyst to act. There are a lot of goals that get shelved because people do not set deadlines into it. Thus, people think that they have all the time in the world to make it happen. Having a deadline will force the person to act now and make it happen. Setting time limits also gives you the chance to manage your time.

4. Record it
Putting them down on paper or voice recording it concretizes the goal. It is no longer just an idea but a plan that you have already committed to. You can even just tell it to someone else. The important thing is voicing it out and accepting it as a goal.

A goal is not effective if it is not set specifically. It must be specific enough for the person to know what to do and how to accomplish it. One of the mistakes of people in setting goals is to make too general goals. For instance, you don’t make a goal like this: I am going to lose weight. This is vague and too general. What you should have made is this: I am going to lose 10 pounds in a month. This makes the goal much more direct. It also gives the person a concrete thing to work on. Without the 10 pounds, you would not know how much to lose. Your brain does not have anything to zero in on.

2. Time frame
A goal needs to have a specific time frame. This gives the person a chance to manage their time and to plan their actions. It also motivates the person to achieve the goal and make it to the deadline. Using the same example above, I am going to lose 10 pounds in a month, having the time period of a month gives the person a specific period to work on. If he/she manages to beat the goal and lose 10 pounds in a month, then the person will be gratified. If he’she manages to lose those pounds in less than a month, all the better. The time frame provides an incentive.

3. Record
If you really want to commit to a goal, write it down or at least keep a record of it somewhere. It can be something as elaborate as a video or even just a voice recording. Having a record of the goals that you set will remind you of the commitments that you made. For most people a checklist works a lot because it also gives people the satisfaction of checking off the items on the list. For others, they put their goals inside the room where they can read it over and over again to serve as motivations.

4. Feedback
One of the major benefits of listing down your goals is seeing them get accomplished one by one. That’s why it is important that you get feedback from your goals. You must know when you have accomplished it. The feedback can come from you or from other people. Feedback motivates people to accomplish more and to set higher goals.

It is not enough that you have goals. You need to set the right kind of goals if you want them to work for you well.
